Ace Hardware Acquired Handyman Matters, Enters “Do-it-for-me” Market with New Ace Handyman Services

Ace Hardware Corporation, recognized globally as the largest retailer-owned hardware cooperative, announced its acquisition of Handyman Matters in 2019, a franchise organization specializing in home repair, maintenance, and improvement services. This strategic move marks Ace Hardware’s expansion into the growing do-it-for-me market segment through the newly formed Ace Handyman Services, which will now operate as a stand-alone subsidiary.

Headquartered in Denver, Colorado, Handyman Matters has established a robust network comprising 57 franchisees, which collectively employ about 250 skilled craftsmen and women across 121 territories in 23 states. These professionals are adept at handling a comprehensive range of services, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, drywall, painting, and flooring.

John Venhuizen, President and CEO of Ace Hardware Corporation, emphasized that the launch of Ace Handyman Services is a significant step towards fulfilling the company’s commitment to providing exceptional service. “This acquisition allows Ace to enhance our helpful promise to consumers and expand our footprint in the do-it-for-me sector,” Venhuizen stated. He further added that the integration not only strengthens the existing franchise network with additional support but also positions the company for aggressive growth through new franchise recruitment.

Handyman Matters, founded in 1998, recently celebrated its 20th anniversary and has been a prominent player in the national franchise landscape, offering extensive maintenance and remodeling services for both residential and commercial properties.

Ace Hardware stands as a pillar in the hardware industry with over 5,200 locally owned and operated stores in roughly 70 countries. Based in Oak Brook, Illinois, and established in 1924, Ace continues to be recognized as a community-centric brand, famed for its helpful service and expertise.

This strategic acquisition by Ace Hardware not only broadens its service offerings but also reinforces its position in the market as a leader in the hardware and home improvement industry.

The popularity of Ace Handyman Services

Based on online research, it seems that the website traffic is growing significantly and the awareness of Ace’s home services seems to be growing fast. In less than 4 years, over 30,000 people search and land on Ace’s home improvement website. (Ahref’s data)

I think this is a really unique service that Ace is offering that the bigger box retailers like The Home Depot and Lowe’s have not played big in. While The Home Depot and Lowe’s have larger home services categories like kitchens, flooring, window coverings etc., Ace seems to be focused on smaller jobs but that possibly happens more frequently.

Most of the traffic to the website also seems to be for handyman services in different markets around the United States.
